How do you open your speech to avoid the glazed eyes syndrome?
It's 9 a.m. and you step onto the platform. In front of you, a sea of eyes are staring at you. Some look open and curious. Others look confrontational -- the "I dare you to tell me something I don't know" look. Others obviously have not had their coffee yet.
You begin to speak and notice some start to have this out-to-lunch look -- the "glazed eyes syndrome."
Uh oh. What happened? No one likes to speak to people who have left the building in every way except physically.
How do you avoid that? How do you compel your audience to sit up and take notice?

How Do You Open Your Speech to Avoid the Glazed Eyes Syndrome?
CORRECTION ON DATE: Join me for a 60-minute free training call February 3, noon Mountain Time. To sign up, click here!
The only reason to miss this call is if it's your wedding day!
There's nothing worse than looking out at your audience and feeling, no, knowing, you've lost them. Sometimes before you even start.
Ah yes, we tell ourselves all kinds of reasons for this like, they're not the right audience for me, or they just haven't figured out how valuable this information is yet, or, I'm just not speaking loudly enough!
Truth is, while any one of these could be possible, chances are you haven't opened your speech using the three elements you must include to get their attention and keep it.
Why does it even matter if your open captures your audience's attention? You know the old saying about first impressions, yes? Well, multiply that by at least one hundred when you're in front of an audience. You have very little time to inspire your audience to pay attention, and it's much more difficult to get them back once they've checked out. Just as importantly, your open sets the tone for your whole speech, and provides a key element for your closing. It's imperative you get it right!
 | | You can engage your audience no matter how large it is! |
I'll be sharing these three elements and much more information on opening your speech during my free training call February 7. You'll learn:
- The three things your open must contain to capture your audience's attention
- The different kinds of "opens" you can choose from depending on your personality and audience
- What you need to consider in selecting an open and how it influences your whole presentation
- Why memorizing your open is essential
- How to get ready to open so you feel excited and confident
To whet your appetite, the three elements are:
Remarkability -- newness, uniqueness, novelty. Something that will stimulate that part of the brain that is always looking for what's different. This gets my attention.
Feeling -- emotion, passion, sentiment. Something that will make your audience feel, empathize, and connect. This will keep their attention and help them remember.
Relevance -- significance, application, consequence. Something that communicates what's in it for your audience -- the reason they will want to continue to pay attention.
I've used different types of opens that contain all three of these elements and have not only avoided the "glazed eyes syndrome," but experienced enthusiastic response! You can too!
