Create. Inspire. Serve!
January/February 2013
Welcome!
Is this the year you decide to break loose and bring out all of your gifts and talents?

This past year I had so many opportunities to work with wonderful people and organizations to do just that. In the process, I've also discovered more of my own gifts and talents, which I'll share with you as we go. If you're ready to step into your authentic voice and experience the richness and impact that results, I'd love to support you.

Enjoy!

Creativity Tip: Three questions and three answers on creating impact through your stories.

The most effective way to show impact is through stories.

Andrew Watt, international president of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, shared this thought with Valley fundraisers when he spoke in Phoenix late last year.

Watt stressed that those in the field of philanthropy are in the business of change, and their currency is impact. That impact is best expressed through the currency of stories.

"Numbers don't give us the stories of philanthropy," he said. "The decisions that move people to action -- in a word -- it's stories. It's their stories we connect to -- not necessarily the amount of money. That's what creates impact."

Whether in philanthropy, marketing, speaking or writing, stories are the glue that hold your information together, and the vehicles that bring the impact of your message home.

In this video, I answer some common questions on creating stories with impact.

Leadership Messaging Coaching and Training

To lead well, leaders need to communicate a message that combines a clear, strategic idea, with dynamic delivery. I work with executives and staff to:

* Understand and develop their core message and deliver it with clarity, enthusiasm and impact, inspiring confidence, commitment and action;

* Identify and determine the strategic placement of stories and information for speaking dates, presentations and meetings;

* Showcase messages in formats including keynote speeches, presentations, elevator speeches, pitches, and written and online editorial and marketing content.

In this issue we are featuring Treasures 4 Teachers.

A Shoe for a Pencil

Seven years ago, Barbara Blalock, founder and executive director of Treasures 4 Teachers, observed a second grade classroom here in Maricopa County. Mrs. Johnson asked her students to get out a piece of paper and pencil. Blalock watched as seven-year-old Sandy untied the shoe laces on her right tennis shoe, pulled it off and handed it to Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson smiled and handed her a pencil.

After class, Blalock asked Johnson why Sandy gave her the shoe for a pencil. Johnson told her she didn't have enough pencils and, this way, she knew she would get it back. Sandy wouldn't leave without her shoe. She told her it wasn't just pencils. She also needed paper, tape, crayons, markers, binders, folders and glue. As tears welled up in her eyes, she shared that if she wanted to do student projects, she had to purchase the supplies with money from her own pocket.

That day, Blalock knew she needed to do something, so she created Treasures 4 Teachers, a nonprofit organization that collects supplies and makes them available to teachers. The organization not only provides a much-needed resource, but diverts more than one hundred truckloads of supplies from the landfill.

Arizona ranks 47th in the nation on student spending, which equates to just five cents per student per day for school supplies. Students can't color without crayons, write without pencils, or correct mistakes without erasers. Their education and self-esteem suffer. This puts a heavy burden on teachers to provide the supplies needed to run an effective classroom. On average, teachers spend up to $1,000 each year out of their own pocket. Treasures 4 Teachers helps to offset that amount by providing free and low cost supplies from the community with the help of companies like Intel, US Airways, Wells Fargo, Ping and SRP.

Last year, the organization provided supplies to 2,500 teachers, reaching 75,000 students. To learn more about the work of Treasures 4 Teachers and how you can get involved, visit Treasures4Teachers.org
