Welcome!
Emotion! It seems to be the stumbling block for a lot of speakers and storytellers. When do I use it? How? What's appropriate? Is it even necessary? More and more research is emerging that emotion is the driver of our actions. To persuade someone to adopt your point of view, volunteer, or make a contribution, it is essential you connect with his or her empathetic brain, and that involves emotion. What are the important questions to help you do that? You can learn more in the video below. I'd love to help you find and deliver the "emotion" in your story. Please contact me at [email protected]. |

| Creativity Tip: Emotion -- Share What You Feel If You Want to Inspire Action!
"I'm not comfortable with emotion." "Does it really matter -- can't I just give them the information?" "We don't have enough time to go into all that emotional stuff."
These are examples of comments I hear from clients who are learning to tell their story. They don't realize that sharing how they feel or felt about the focus of their story is as important, if not more so, then what actually happened! Even more, they are not really comfortable doing it.

Tell Your Story! How do you serve? Do you know an organization or person you'd like to acknowledge? Email me here. In this issue, we are focusing on Arizona Community Action Association, Phoenix, Ariz. The Arizona Community Action Association's (ACAA) goal is ultimately to eliminate poverty. It's doing this by working with and through nearly 300 organizations and individuals across Arizona, providing case management, asset development and emergency assistance services. Steven was one of those individuals who benefited from that assistance. A young man with big brown eyes and a beautiful smile, Steven was homeless. In his own words: "I didn't have a permanent place of residence. I moved from family member, to friend, back to family member. It didn't seem like it would change. I didn't have the budgeting or financial knowledge, or the skills that were necessary for me to move out on my own and start saving. "Through the Individual Development Account (IDA) Program and the staff at A New Leaf in Mesa, Ariz. (one of ACAA's partners), I began saving on a regular basis. "I lived in poverty, in the projects. I didn't have any idea of buying a home, and wouldn't have been able to without the instruction from the classes and the financial assistance from the IDA. It would still be a dream. "I feel proud and I also feel humble. I feel I'm becoming a productive member of society." Steven now smiles easily and is helping lift others out of poverty through his work as volunteer coordinator at the Rehoboth Community Development Corporation, Phoenix, Ariz. ACAA works with Community Action Agencies to provide programs like Arizona Self Help, a free online resource; and food and nutrition, energy, and weatherization services to give people in need-- people like Steven -- so they too can become productive members of society. It's a hand up, not a hand out. For more information about ACAA, and its upcoming 2012 Annual Conference, Creating A Community Of Action, on May 10-11, click here: www.azcaa.org.
