Finding Your Story -- Three Questions to Unleash Your Creative Power!

"Does everyone have a story to work on?"

When I first began teaching story performance, I never would have thought this question could elicit such looks of panic, confusion or resignation. Now I know better. It elicits those looks because finding the story that makes your point and meets all the "story requirements" can be a real challenge!

We're not used to thinking about how to tell our stories, even though we share them all the time. Getting purposeful about telling "your story" is an act of courage, persistence and faith! It also requires us to step outside of our normal way of thinking and step into those creative shoes.

I've lived with this question and the deer-in-the-headlight expressions now for several years. To say I don't have all the answers is an understatement, but I have uncovered some pointers. From my own experience and the wisdom of many others, I share three questions you can engage to find your story. Check out the Creativity Tip video to find out!

Enjoy!

The Story Performance Coaching Bootcamp is Here!

Learning how to tell your story to incorporate the story arc is about the most important thing you can do to inspire people to support you.

Research has proven this time and time again.

You have the opportunity to find, develop and deliver your story to inspire action. I'm teaching Tell Your Story: A Performance Coaching BootCamp through the ASU Lodestar Center May 16 and 19, 2014.

This is a comprehensive program. You'll learn everything you need to know about telling your story and gain invaluable presentation skills as part of the package!

If you are a CEO, board member or development director, you know how important it is to tell your story well.

Here's what one executive director had to say about her experience with the story coaching process:

"I could not have won the Mentor's Choice Award of $2,500 at the Social Venture Partner's Fast Pitch event, and an amazing commitment for $40,000 from two members of the audience without all of Andrea's coaching and support. It was both invaluable, and extremely valuable! Thank you, Andrea." Barbara Blalock, Executive Director, Treasures 4 Teachers, Tempe, AZ

New Program to Ease Stage Fright

Stage fright. We don't even want to talk about it, even though everyone struggles with it to some degree. Somehow, even admitting we get nervous presenting in front of others brings up feelings of inadequacy and more. Certainly, the experience of it prevents us from taking advantage of wonderful opportunities, or makes the experience simply miserable.

I'm thrilled to offer a program in two phases where you will learn some powerful tools and techniques to ease the debilitating effects of stage fright.

Creativity Tip:
Three Questions to Unleash Your Creative Power and Find Your Story!

What's your story ? Identifying the story that will help you make your point, land the donor, or sell the job can involve many more questions than answers, at least at first.

In my own business, I've created and shared a number of stories for different purposes. I've written my brand story, shared success stories, told personal stories and uttered a couple of recovery/redemption stories. Each time, I chose to step into the unknown and express some vulnerability to make my point.

What makes this worth it? Well, not only are stories one of the most powerful tools to engage and persuade others, we are wired to hear them. That gets us going. What carries us through the process is love, pure and simple.

To Sell Is Human, The Surprising Truth About Moving Others, by Daniel Pink

This is a fantastic book. It outlines clearly how nine out of 10 of us are in the sales profession, either through the direct selling of a product or service, or "non-sales" selling, to move others. Pink provides the steps, the case studies and the research to back up his platform. A must read!

Tales of Transformation and Artistry!

The Rose Mapendo Foundation -- Helping the Victims of Genocide War Rebuild Their Lives

Her name is Rose Mapendo. In 1998, she lived in a beautiful home in Kasayi, Congo, surrounded by the comforts of life and blessed with the love of her husband and eight children.

Then the war against the Congolese, Tutsi Banyamurenge began. On September 23rd at 10 p.m., soldiers broke into their home. They arrested her at gunpoint and took her and her children to a prison on a military base. She knew if the soldiers found her husband, he would be shot on sight. So he hid, temporarily, hoping to live another day to rescue his family.

That day didn't come. Three days later, when he could no longer stand not knowing what happened to his family, he turned himself in and was murdered.

This began a torturous 16-month travail for Rose and her children. In spite of no food or water for days at time, beatings, torture, filthy conditions, and, believe it or not, having twin babies while in captivity, she emerged from this hellish experience with gratitude in her heart and forgiveness for her torturers. She was eventually rescued and given food, clothing and a chance for she and her children and to have a new life.

Rose Mapendo Today, she lives in Phoenix, cares for her children, and
works on behalf of the women and children who survived this war through the Rose Mapendo Foundation.

"Mapendo means great love," says Rose. "I believe God saved me for this purpose. I am deeply grateful to be alive and help these women find their lives again."

The Rose Mapendo Foundation operates a center in the Congo where women are given food, education, and skills. She travels the globe bringing her message of forgiveness to audiences large and small, asking for support. She was nominated as a CNN Hero.

"No one can do this alone," says Rose. "I would not be here if others had not helped me."

I'm beyond thrilled to share the video Richard Palalay and I produced to share our new song, One Heart, One Mind. We had a lot of help from friends. Click on this photo to see our video. I hope you will share it. Let's get this message out there!

One Heart, One Mind
