Singleton Moms: Keeping the Lights On
By Jody Farley-Berens
Executive Director and Co-Founder

Singleton Moms supports single parents with cancer. Yes, that's right. That is a tough situation to think about. I know, because I think about it every day. In 2009, there were more than 17,000 single parents with cancer living in the Valley, and in 2005, my friend, Michelle Singleton, was one of them. She was 32 years old and the mother of four children between the ages of 18 months and 14 years old.

On a hot September morning in 2005, I received a phone call from a friend that Michelle's electricity would be turned off the next day. I knew she hadn't been working, but I never thought this could happen, especially in 110 degree heat. I mean, come on! So, I started calling around to find an organization that could help. I found nothing. In a desperate move, I called my father to ask if he would write a check. This was a big deal, because my father -- a rough and tumble Irishman -- was not someone you asked for money. But that day, moved to tears, he wrote the check.

When I delivered it to Michelle that day, I was shocked to see her. She was sitting on the couch in a nightgown. What hair she did have was a wreck, and she was holding an oxygen mask to her face. Composing myself as best as I could, I gave her the check. Her eyes filled with tears. She didn't say anything. She didn't have to.

As I left, I realized that something so simple -- giving $200 to keep the lights on -- made a huge difference to Michelle. I realized that giving doesn't have to be some grand gesture. This small gift took some of the burden from her shoulders and she felt gratitude and relief.

Michelle fought a valiant battle, but ultimately passed away from the cancer. But, what she didn't know was that she was the catalyst for Singleton Moms. My friend, Andy, and I decided someone had to do something to help these mothers, so we formed a 501c3 in 2006. To date, we have provided more than $200,000 in direct financial assistance toward bills. We've also cleaned homes, provided holiday gifts for some very courageous children, and provided meals. We're helping keep the lights on for these deserving families.
