When Imagining Them In Their Underwear Just Doesn't Cut It!

I don't know about you, but picturing people in their underwear as a way to deal with stage fright never worked for me.

Neither did anyone saying to me, "You can do it! Just get out their and knock 'em dead." If anything, that made me more nervous. Now the pressure was on!

If you've ever struggled with stage fright, nervousness or anxiety, you know what I'm talking about.

You might also feel as if you'll never be able to stand in front of a group without feeling that horrible sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. I get it. And I'm here to say, it can happen. I struggled with serious stage fright for decades. I can honestly say that bully stage fright no longer owns me. Sometimes it visits, but I know what to do now, and so can you.

Your Presence Moment

"People intuitively understand that they need to try something new, to take a bold step. They know they must break out of their old way of thinking and responding." Robert Kriegel, If It Ain't Broke . . . Break It!

P.S. Moving outside of our comfort zone is uncomfortable. And that's the point! Our possibilities have suddenly expanded exponentially.

What to say, what to say, what to say . . .

I'm often confronted with this dilemma when I write about stage fright. It's one of those things that those of us who struggle with it, or have struggled, don't understand. Neither do those who don't. We can't make sense of feeling nervous, especially when we know our stuff. There's a reason for that. It's not about making sense.

Stage fright does not live in our rational brains. It lives in our subconscious. It lives in that part of our brains that wants to keep us safe, even from things that can't really hurt us, at least physically.

It is a dilemma. And not a pleasant one.

Which is why I created my program, Stage Fright to Stage Free! Because all the well-intentioned tips like "just imagine them in their underwear" don't work, at least they didn't for me, and they don't for anyone I know.

I struggled with stage fright for decades. Thank goodness I don't anymore. Quite honestly, stage fright sucks. There's no other way to put it. So, when I kept hearing about my clients' struggles, I wanted to find a way to help them.

If you'd like to see stage fright in your rear view window, I invite you to join me on my free training call June 2, 2015, How to Stop Fear From Bullying You When You Speak!

To register, click here!

I suggest you do it now. Registration deadline is May 30, and after that, I can't guarantee you'll get the call in information in time.

During the call, you'll learn:
  • Why we feel stage fright.

  • The first thing you need to know to move through it.

  • What you can do right now to deliver your presentation more effectively whether or not you feel nervous.

I'll also invite you to join my virtual group program, Stage Fright to Stage Free! beginning June 23, 2015, but I promise, you'll learn plenty during the call, whether you sign up for the course or not.

In the meantime, here are a couple of tips to help you out prior to the call:

When you get that sinking feeling before you start to speak, remember:
  • Focus on the value you are providing, not on yourself. You are there because you can help your audience.

  • You and your audience are together in this. You belong there. The only difference -- you are standing in front of them instead of beside them. You may imagine they are judging you harshly (even before you open your mouth!), but that is your imagination, not the truth. In fact, they are simply there, happy for you to share your wisdom with them.

  • Slow down. Breathe. Smile. You will live.

Be well!
