Tell Your Story! How do you serve? Do you know an organization or person you'd like to acknowledge? Email me here. In this issue, we are featuring St. Joseph the Worker. St. Joseph the Worker is located in the Lodestar Day Center at the Human Services Campus in downtown Phoenix. Started by two priests offering food to those in need, in the park, St. Joseph the Worker's mission is to assist homeless, low-income and other disadvantaged individuals in their efforts to become self-sufficient through permanent, full-time employment. St. Joseph's provides job-seeking support services such as telephone and computer access, resume development, professional clothing, and job/life skills courses. It does not provide job placement. To be eligible, a client must want full-time, permanent employment, be sober for 30 days, live in a shelter, have a photo I.D. and a social security card, and be at least 18 years old. Blue Swadener, special events and outreach coordinator, says 95 percent of their clients are recently homeless or have an immediate threat. Their clients represent a diverse population. Some have an 8th grade education; others have master's degrees. Many have lost jobs due to illness, natural disasters (such as Hurricane Katrina) and downsizing. Others have had issues with drugs and alcohol, domestic violence and mental illness. St. Joseph's also works with those who have been incarcerated, or are just about to be released. Half of their clients have been incarcerated, and half of those now have jobs. Last year, St. Joseph's helped 400 people get jobs. Most were entry level; nearly half also received benefits. "We bring hope to people who don't have any," says Blue. "I want to interrupt people's assumptions about who is homeless. I want people to know that anything is possible." Blue shared the story of one young woman, Susan (not her real name), who began using drugs with her husband. As a result, they lost their jobs, housing, custody of their children, and were incarcerated. Susan was introduced to St. Joseph's in prison at a workshop the organization conducted. When she was released, she took advantage of the services. Today, she has a full-time position, has earned her bachelor's degree, and has been reunited with her five children. She is newly engaged and also volunteers for St. Joseph's. She was named client of the year. She recently held a water drive to supply water to people who are homeless to prevent dehydration during the summer months. St. Joseph the Worker is supported by the Valley of the Sun United Way, among other funders. For more information, click here. |
