Tell Your Story! How do you serve? Do you know an organization or person you'd like to acknowledge? Email me here. In this issue, we are focusing on TAP, the Technical Assistance Partnership. What a Concept -- Working Together, Building on Strengths! On September 28, I stood before 130 nonprofit professionals at 10 a.m. at the Fiesta Inn ballroom in Tempe. I was there to take these folks through a training on the power of telling your story to raise funds and friends. My program was sponsored by the SLHI Technical Assistance Partnership, affectionately known as TAP. For an hour and a half, I had the privilege of working with these energetic, caring, and enthusiastic people to craft their organizations' stories into something that inspired them, and would inspire their audiences. I have to say, it was one of the most fun experiences I've had as a professional speaker and trainer. So, what is TAP and why would you want to know about it? TAP is a complimentary program (means free to you) where teams of nonprofit organization and community coalition representatives commit to working together to initiate, select and implement solutions to common organizational, technical and community development issues. These teams are matched with consultants who help them collaboratively work through challenges and opportunities. The program is only available in Maricopa County. SLHI hires consultants to work with TAP groups to coach, consult or facilitate work in areas such as board development, strategic planning, and just recently, story telling! Yup, I've joined the ranks as consultant. While nonprofit professionals make up the bulk of participants, for-profit professionals who volunteer for nonprofits and those from governmental agencies also may join the teams. It's important to "tap" into everyone's assets. So, TAP is better described as a learning network than as a program. TAP is funded by St. Luke's Health Initiatives (SLHI), Phoenix. The beauty of the program is these professionals learn as much or more from each other as they do from the consultant. That's the idea. SLHI stresses a strengths-based approach -- let's start with what works and build from there. Success stories abound. Here are a few comments from TAP participants: "We successfully formed and launched our program and received a $400k per year grant from to serve the needs of predominantly diverse inner-city minority populations in a cultural compe- tent manner." "Our board has become more organized and focused on treating our organization with the same mindset that a for-profit business needs. We have become more unified." "I learned how to prioritize the initiatives and tasks on my list. I learned better how to delegate duties and responsibilities. I now know much more about how to resolve conflict and mission-critical issues. There are fewer fires to put out these days."
