Happy Holidays!
Create. Inspire. Serve!

December, 2012
Welcome!

I want to wish you the happiest of holiday seasons. From my heart to yours, I hope it is filled with love, joy and gratitude for all the blessings you have in your life!

If you have yet to see the new movie, Lincoln, I highly recommend you do so. This is a powerful story about the passage of the 13th amendment, and, much to my delight, about the compelling nature of stories.

Lincoln used stories to encourage understanding, persuade, and just to entertain himself and others! What can we learn from Lincoln? Watch my video below!

Creativity Tip: Learning from Lincoln -- the Power of Stories to Move a Nation

When I sat down in the movie theater to watch the film, Lincoln, I expected to like it. I didn't expect to be so moved I sat in my seat through the ending credits and did my best not to cry too loudly.

This movie told the story of the passage of the 13th amendment, but that description simply does not do it justice. It told the story of a nation coming to terms with its own moral compass and how difficult that can be. And it told the story of the power of stories.

What I watched was how to use stories to persuade a nation to make a major change. I'm not saying that's all there was to it -- obviously not! But, we do know that stories are one of the most powerful tools we have to persuade others. Click on this video to hear the three lessons I took away from this beautiful movie.

ASU Lodestar Center Conference Workshop a Success! I'm so happy to share with you the evaluation results from the workshop I presented at the ASU Lodestar Center conference on October 18 -- "Telling Your Story for Investment and Impact." The overall rating was 4.89/5.00, and the work applicability rating was 4.96/5.00. We had a packed room.

In response to the question, "What actions will you take, if any, as a result of participating in this workshop?" participants replied: "I'll use this for recruitment and training purposes," "I will develop a treasury of stories for use by board members of my client organizations," and "This was awesome -- I wish it was longer!"

There were plenty of other comments on how this work will support their efforts. Many thanks to Cynthia Thiede and ASU, for the opportunity!

I've refreshed my website! Over the past several years, the focus of my work has shifted so I needed to update my website to reflect that. Please take a look at it by clicking this link www.AndreaBeaulieu.com and let me know what you think. I still have work to do -- I want it to be more interactive. I'd like to share more of your stories. Like me, it is a work in progress!

The Whole Reason

What was she supposed to do? Give up her eldest son, or her new baby? There was no other option.

Sound like part of the script from the movie, Sophie's Choice? It isn't. It's the beginning of the real-life story of Zarmina, a woman in Afghanistan who was located and helped by Hagar International, a faith-based organization that works with women and girls -- some as young as five -- who have known terror, isolation and despair. They are the victims of severe abuse in the form of domestic violence, sexual trafficking and other forms of exploitation.

Zarmina had an abusive father and a drug-smuggling husband. She became homeless with five children and had to work in a brothel -- they needed food and shelter. One day, a policeman showed up and asked her to give him her son. She refused. He demanded, "Then give me the baby instead." She did.

There was no other option.

Zarmina will always live with deep scars, but today, she can go to the doctor. Her children can go to school. For the first time, she can trust that she and her children will be taken care of.

Mark Walker, CEO of Hagar International, recently returned from Cambodia where he met many women just like Zarmina.

"I realized I have not had enough trauma in my life, at least not to understand this level of pain," he reflected. "But, it was certainly a confirmation of why I want to do the work of helping women and children in this world."

Hagar supports these women through every phase of the process: providing protection, immediate shelter and community-based recovery services, counseling, medical attention, education and employment opportunities, social enterprise opportunities, and reintegration into society so these women and children can belong and contribute to society. Their mission: whatever it takes for as long as it takes to restore life in all its fullness.

Mark and I have worked together on his story, leadership messaging and board retreat design. While I knew what the organization did, it's especially powerful to hear the stories. If you'd like to learn more, please click here: Hagar International.
