Creativity Tip: Are you listening?

This month's creativity tip will need to be old school -- written. Yes, FlipShare changed its software and my Mac doesn't read it . . . yet! Because . . . Santa is bringing me a new computer for Christmas, so next month I'll be back to video sharing.

You would agree, I assume, that good listening is essential to leading a team, yes? We need to listen to our team members to learn what is important to them, to understand their needs and desires, and to work through conflicts that arise.

So, as promised, this month I am sharing two of the four basic types of listening identified by C. Otto Scharmer, author of Theory U, Leading from the Future as It Emerges.

1. "Yeah, I know that already." This type of listening is essentially "downloading." We listen to confirm what we think we already know -- our habitual ways of looking at or doing things.

2. "Ooh, look at that!" This type of listening is "object-focused" or "factual." We listen to learn information that differs from what we already know. This is a particularly "scientific" way of listening. You ask questions and observe/listen to the responses you are given.

Both of these types of listening involve our mental function, the second more actively than the first. Next month, I'll share information on emotional and intuitive listening.

I find this fascinating. What kind of listening do you do?

"Andrea's coaching took me to a whole new level with my story. It was a good story, but now it is a great story that has a powerful impact. Her great questions and listening uncovered parts of the story that had always been there, but because I was so close to the story, I was missing them. I am so grateful for Andrea's talent in bringing out the best in me so I can better serve my audiences."
Paula Shoup, Business Coach and Consultant

Get on Board with Business on Board
Applications Being Accepted until December 31

Michael Martin and Shelley Detwiller DiGiacomo are graduates of Business on Board, a program of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Phoenix that
identifies, recruits and trains business professionals for nonprofit arts and human services board positions.

"The Business on Board (BOB) program provided me the tools I needed to be an effective board member," said Martin, executive vice president, Tempe Visitors & Convention Bureau. "I have been involved with nonprofit boards for several years, but was not aware that such a training course existed
before discovering the BOB program.  It has helped me become a more effective board member."

DiGiacomo, an associate with Osborn Maledon, P.A., said that Business on Board "taught me what to expect from my role as a board member and helped me find an organization where I could be a 'good fit' and make a difference."

The Arts & Business Council of Greater Phoenix is in the business of growing leaders who can serve and enrich arts and cultural organizations. The Council is the bridge between the arts and business, and that bridge is built of inspired, passionate people.

The next Business on Board class begins January 12. The application deadline is December 31. This training program offers sessions on essential governance issues including Board Rules and Responsibilities, Fundraising and The Art of Networking. Each class is taught by a Valley based business professional or executive with specific experience.

"Community service is critical for vital cities like those in the Valley," said Debbie Paine, executive director. "But simply wanting to be on a board does not mean you understand the range of roles and responsibilities that go along with board service. The Business on Board program provides that insight and information."
